2000年出版,由Jean Stillwell Peccei(帕西)独著,由李宇明导读的《儿童语言》,正如该书导读所言,“儿童语言学是研究儿童语言发展的过程、规律及相关问题的科学”。“儿童语言学的研究价值体现在多学科、多方面。就目前发挥作用较多的领域来看,其研究价值主要有五个方面:语言学价值、心理学价值、人类学价值、教育学价值以及神经病理学价值”。本书用语言学的观点,从音系学、形态学、句法学、语用学等方面概括分析了儿童语言习得的整个过程:包括词义习得、句子结构、会话技巧以及发音等。下面作简要介绍。

全书正文12节,分为五个部分。

第一部分“词汇和词义习得”,分三节。

第一节,开始说话。按照儿童语言的发展顺序首先介绍其早期词语习得。以Christian零到五岁的真实语料为例,提出问题,分析问题,解决问题,总结规律。Christian从零岁时的“哇哇大哭”到五岁时能用语言表达自己的真实想法。在短短的五年时间内,语言究竟是如果发展的?这一过程是神奇的,但是我们不能问孩子自己“你们是如何学习语言?”我们也忘记了自己学习语言的过程,我们所能做的是记录儿童语言发展过程中的真实资料,然后分析特点,寻求内在规律,得出结论:“儿童学习语言是一个主动的过程,该过程中儿童所犯的错误是有规律的,不是凌乱的,是为建立语言规则系统所进行的积极探索”。

儿童在一岁左右的时候开始能理解几个单词,并用身势语或者语调和周围的人们进行交流。也就是从这一阶段,儿童开始发出他们第一个有意义的词语,开始用语言进行交流,所以本书研究的语言是从儿童一岁开始。

通过资料分析,发现儿童早期习得的前50个词语具有以下特点:一、都是和日常生活相联系的;二、绝大多数是表示事物的,而且这些事物大都是他们可接触到的、比较小的(shoe)、能拿到的(key)、可移动的(car)或者有声响的(clock);三、也包含表示动作(give)、修饰 (dirty) 以及交际词语 (bye-bye)。这一阶段儿童习得词语等于成人语言范畴。

第二节,寻找词义。儿童学习新词时,有词义扩大和词义缩小两种现象。当儿童使一个词的使用范围超出成人语言的范围时,是词义扩大;当使用范围小于成人语言的范畴时,是词义缩小。词义扩大有三种类型:一是范畴性的,即用表示甲事物的词来指称乙事物;二是推理性的,即用表示甲事物的词来指称与之物理性质或功能有某种相似性的事物;三是陈述性的,如用表示事物的词来表示与之相关联的处所等。词汇习得是语言习得的一个部分,这一过程伴随人类始终。儿童不可能轻而易举地习得词典里的所有词汇,但是在5岁以前,儿童自己的词汇库里已经有成千上万个单词。1973年,Clark对父母记录的儿童的语言作了一系列的研究,发现尽管这些记录来自于不同的语言,但得出同一结论:儿童早期语言均出现词义扩大现象。关于词义扩大现象,Clark指出:根据事物的性质和特点,儿童的词义扩大现象不大相同。但是这一分析太概括化,不能清晰地解释所有的词义扩大现象。儿童的词义扩大通常是他们对周围世界感知的一种反映。这种词义扩大不仅仅是根据事物之间物理的相似性,有时还根据事物之间的相同功能来扩大词义。

分析儿童早期词的意义时,必须注意当儿童使一个词的使用范围不等于成人使用范围时,我们并不知道当时儿童使用这个词时,头脑里想的是什么。这也并不是说儿童不知道这个词的意义,可能有其他如下原因:一、儿童知道该词,但由于该词发音比较难。故有意回避该词,而选择另外一个相似但发音较容易的词来代替;二、某个词临时记不起来,会选择一个相关的词来代替;三、儿童把一个复杂的话语形式减缩为一个词,或者用一个词去代替这个词所处的位置。

第三节,构建词典。本节主要介绍儿童对动词和形容词的习得以及他们是如何建立词与词之间的联系的。由于相近的动词之间差别非常细微,如put和give,儿童容易混用,这一现象恰是儿童逐渐学习词与词之间微小区别的一个反映。1972年,Clark发现空间形容词比其他形容词更难习得。空间形容词指空间的延伸或者尺寸的扩大,具有相对性,只是在和其他物体比较时才表现出大、小或者高、低等,因此,空间形容词都有反义词。同年,Clark构建了空间形容词习得顺序(见表一)。

三岁到四岁的儿童词库构建主要是区别词与词之间的细微差别,这一年龄段的词语习得错误指出儿童已经开始观察或者验证自己母语的规则形式。儿童掌握一个新词,就需要把这个词放在一定的词汇系统中,要学习词语之间的意义联系,这比孤立的学习一个词困难。儿童不断地在已有的词汇中加入新词,建立词语之间的联系,就逐渐构建起自己的词典。

第二部分“语法”习得,分四节。

第四节,组合句子。本节开始介绍儿童语法习得,首先从组合句子开始。我们分析儿童所说的第一个句子时会从这个句子所包含的词、词义以及用途来分析。儿童在“独词”句阶段,一个词就是一个句子,一个陈述,甚至一句话,表达的意思要比这个词的内容要复杂。两岁左右的儿童,一旦在口语中掌握了前50个词,就开始把“独词”组合在一起,形成句子。在接下来的很长一段时间内,儿童的句子仅仅包含两个单词,所以语言学家和心理学家把这一阶段称为“双词句”阶段。儿童句子出现的词都是必需的、能表达意义的词。这种词叫做实词(content words),一般指人、物、行为、特性。通常情况下包含名词、动词和形容词。当然,偶尔他们也会遗漏这些词中的某些词。例如,某一动作的执行者“人”,但是当时的语境可以明确地显示这一执行者。同时,我们还发现,儿童所遗漏的词在语法上是必须的,但并不影响句子意思的表达,这种词叫做功能词(function words),包括:冠词、介词、谓语动词、助动词。所以,儿童早期的句子具有电报话语,即简洁的特点。电报话语是Roger Brown 1976年提出的,一直是描写儿童语言的最佳方式。然而如果我们用这一方式来描写儿童大脑内部的变化,那将是一种误导。因为,在电报中,成人省略了功能词,问题是成人知道自己省略了什么,但是儿童在“电报话语”阶段,远不知道自己省略了什么。

虽然儿童在造句阶段通常会遗漏一些词,但是,他们句子中所用的词序跟成人句子中的词序相同。当孩子把英语作为母语习得时,这一现象被广泛证明。在英语学习中,词序是相当重要的。例如:Bill kicked Fred.和Fred kicked Bill.表达两种截然不同的意思。词序是我们了解who kicked who的唯一方式。

1976年,Roger Brown和他的同事们研究了来自全世界不同国家的儿童“双词句”。发现不论儿童们所用的词序如何,其语义关系都大致相同。虽然词序偶尔会因国家、地区、儿童的不同而不同。语义关系大致有如下十种类型:“施事――动作”(daddy kick)、“动作――影响”(throw stick)、“施事――影响”(me ball)、“动作――处所”(sit chair)、“实体――处所”(spoon tabel)、“所有者――所有物”(daddy coat)、“实体――特性”(Kitty big)、“命名”(that cake)、“重复”(more ball)以及“否定”(no ball)等十种类型。然而这种语义分析也不是万能的。例如我想让你关上窗户。我会用Close the window.或者 I’m cold.两个句子来表达。用上面的语义关系分析这两个句子分别是“动作――影响”和“实体――特性。但是这种分析不能看出两个句子其实表达了同一个意思。

总之,儿童两岁左右的时候,开始构建句子。早期句子仅仅包含两个单词,其特点是简洁,犹如电报话语,大多使用实词,如名词、动词以及形容词。早期句子用两种方法来分析:一是语义关系;二是句子用途。

第五节,造长句子。双词句阶段之后,儿童的句子不断加长,开始有了功能词,但仍然具有“电报句”的一些特点。这些句子是把两个有关系的双词句合在一起构成的。这个阶段,儿童已经不是完全按照语义来组合句子,而是开始使用语法规则。把语义和语法区别开来的原因是这个阶段语义关系已经不能解释英语语言工作的所有原理。对其他语言也是如此。如果儿童继续使用语义关系来组建句子的话,这种语言发展是走不远的。儿童这个时期出现的错误,都是主动建立语法规则的尝试。然而儿童如何构建这种抽象的规则系统一直是个未解的问题。

这一阶段儿童的语言与其说按年龄来划分,不如按阶段(stage)来划分。因为正常的儿童在使用句子结构的时候,可能会存在几个月的差别。在双词句阶段结尾之时,孩子开始说出更多的三词句或者四词句。也就是从这个时候开始,句子产生了。然而,并没有三词句阶段,接下来,孩子的语言发展相当惊人。早期的三词句,四词句仍然具有“电报句”的特点,一些功能词依然被省略。动词通常缺少过去时或者第三人称结尾。然而我们也发现了一些重要的变化,儿童开始使用一些介词、冠词了。句子也更加完整了。

双词句阶段之后,儿童用两种方式扩展句子:其一,儿童经常一连串说出三个句子。每一个句子都表达同样的意思。前两个句子合起来已经包含了所要表达意思的所有语义关系,第三个句子把所有的语义关系合在一起;其二,扩展已经存在的部分。

第六节,否定与提问。本节讲述儿童对英语否定句和疑问句的习得。在英语中,助动词的习得对英语否定句和疑问句的习得至关重要。

否定句的习得。要经过三个阶段。儿童一开始把否定词no或者not放在句首或者句尾;第二个阶段学会把否定词插入句中使用;到第三个阶段否定词前出现助动词,但儿童要花相当长的一段时间学习使用助动词do和与否定有关的其他规则。

在问句系统中,儿童首先习得是非问句,即一般疑问句。英语的是非问句,助动词需要出现在句首。儿童一开始的是非问句不使用助动词,随后才出现助动词。在特殊疑问句中,儿童一开始就会把疑问词放在句首,where, what 出现最早,接着是why等特指疑问句。特殊疑问句中的助动词与主语的倒装现象,要比是非问句出现的晚。

第七节,成为造词者。儿童在“电报句”阶段,名词、动词常常没有词尾。随着年龄的增长,儿童词汇在增加,从两岁半开始,儿童开始学习构建新词,其方法有合成法、转化法、前缀、后缀等,通过这几种方式逐渐习得构词法和构形法。英语中有大量的词是通过这几种方式构建的。为了满足人们讲话的需求(其实所有的语言都在变化),当新词被需要的时候,人们会根据就近原则用现有的词来组建新词。两岁半的儿童已经具备这种构词能力,而且相当具有创造性。这部分是因为儿童的词汇处于不断增加的过程之中,当儿童有表达愿望的时候,想用那个词的时候,可能还没有意识到这个词已经存在,或者暂时忘记了所要用的词,这个时候,儿童就会创造一个新词。正因为如此,就出现了后来的“过分概括”现象,即把不规则形式改为规则形式。其实,在双词句阶段,儿童已经开始注意动词的时态词尾和名词的复数词尾。“过分概括”这一现象绝不是模仿的结果。因为成人不会使用这样的语言。这就证明了儿童语言习得不是被动地模仿,而是主动探索建立规则的过程。儿童一旦构建了某一规则(如动词的时态词尾),就会经常使用。随着年龄的增长,儿童逐渐意识到了不规则动词的变化,“过分概括”现象逐渐减少,曾经所创造的“规则”动词也随之消失。

第三部分“儿向语言特点介绍”第八节。

第八节,会话。本节主要介绍儿向语言的特点以及儿童会话技巧的发展。成人会话所谈论的话题一般都不是眼前所能看到的,摸到的。他们所谈论的事件要么是已经发生,要么是还没有发生的。在会话中,他们经常使用代词,说话速度快,而且很少重复。那么,成人在和儿童交流时,所用的语言是否有改变,如果改变,又具有什么特点呢?

在很多文化中,父母、成人或者照顾儿童的人都会用一种不同于成人交流的语言和儿童交流,这种语言被称为儿向语言。儿向语言一般具有音高较高、语调夸张、语速较慢、多停顿、吐字清晰、重复、重叠、较少使用代词、语句较短的特点。在会话过程中,成人关心的是同儿童的交谈能否顺利进行,较少指出儿童的错误,即使指出,也多是词汇错误。成人同儿童交谈的话题,多是现时的或者现场的,随着儿童认知和语言发展,父母才开始同儿童交谈已经发生的或者未来要发生的事件,即“抽象”事件或话题。一个成功的交流者,不仅要懂得自己所使用的语言的词汇和语法,更重要的是懂得会话技巧。儿向语言对儿童发展影响很大。儿童就是通过儿向语言的引导来习得语言和会话技巧的。

第四部分“儿童语音习得”分两节。

第九节,学习发音。本节介绍儿童语音习得。儿童早期发音通常会出现四种现象:其一,词尾辅音省略(deletion of final consonant);其二,遇到辅音串时省略其中一个辅音(cluster reduction);其三,在连缀的辅音之间,或者词尾插入元音,或用元音代替音节辅音(N, L, R)形成“辅音――元音”或“辅音――元音――辅音――元音”的结构(addition/ substitution);其四,在一些双音节或多音节词中,儿童通常会遗漏不重读的音节。这四种现象看起来是不同的过程,但是如果我们从不同的角度来分析的话,就会发现这四种现象反映出一个普遍模式,即:儿童早期语音习得模式。这一模式可以被称作儿童早期语音习得过程。此处需要阐明一个概念,即:辅音音节。在英语中,大多数音节包含一个元音,但是偶尔辅音N和 L能单独形成一个音节,尤其当其处于词尾的时候。笔者在此把这类音节称为辅音音节。辅音R在美式英语、英式英语的一些变体中同样具有这种功能,所以也被称为辅音音节。通常情况下,对习得英语的儿童来说,容易用元音去代替这些能独立成为音节的辅音。

第十节 语音习得。本节继续介绍儿童的语音习得。在语音习得中,儿童也用一个辅音代替另一辅音。这有多种情况:其一,儿童倾向于用发音位置相同的塞音代替擦音,而且用清塞音代替清擦音,如用[t]代替[s],用浊塞音代替浊擦音,如用[d]代替[z];其二,在成对的清浊塞音中,如[b] / [p] 、[d] / [t]、 [g] / [k]等,儿童倾向于在词的开头用浊塞音,在词的末尾用清塞音;其三,同化,即用词的末尾的辅音,同化词的开头的辅音:如将dog 发成gog,是词尾的g把词首的d同化为g,这是全同化;再如将sam发成 nam ,是词尾的m将词首的s同化为n, n是舌尖鼻音,m是双唇鼻音,发音方法相同,但发音部位不同,这是半同化。
